Richard Whittam QC is a specialist regulatory and criminal practitioner. He has considerable experience in the most complex and high profile criminal cases. He was First Senior Treasury Counsel [Crime] 2013-2015. Throughout his time as Treasury Counsel he maintained his defence practice.
He was awarded Crime Silk of the Year 2016 and again ranked as a Leading QC in the 2017 edition of the Chambers & Partners Guide to the Bar, which states Richard is “renowned and respected by commentators for his tenacity, work ethic and superior jury advocacy”. Richard has been ranked by Chambers as a leading barrister for over 16 years: “a fearless advocate who glides through proceedings with effortless style”.
In addition to his advocacy he advises on law and strategy pre-charge in important and sensitive cases. In 2013 he was instructed by the SFO regarding its investigation into RR plc. He led a team of junior counsel and advised the SFO with regard to the DPA. Richard dealt with all the substantive law [including jurisdiction], the negotiations and penalty. He appeared at both the private and public hearings.
His appellate practice includes cases of public importance and where the Court of Appeal has asked for assistance.
His practice has an international element. He has made presentations in the US and to the Quintet of Attorneys General. He has taught European, African and Asian judges.
Richard is a Deputy High Court Judge, a Recorder authorised to sit at the Central Criminal Court, a member of the RFU Judicial Panel and is the Independent Examiner to the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries. He is an International Associate Member of the American Bar Association.
