Prof. Andrew Goodman LLB MBA PhD FCIArb FRSA FInstCPD Barrister and CEDR Mediator practises in commercial litigation, professional negligence and property disputes. He is a Master of the Bench of Inner Temple. He has been an arbitrator since 1988, a CEDR mediator since 1993 and travels internationally in that capacity and as a mediation advocate, trainer, advisor and consultant to governments, judiciaries, Bars and companies. Andrew is widely recognized as a thought leader in the field of mediation. He is Convenor of the Standing Conference of Mediation Advocates, Director of the Association of Mediation Assessors, Trainers and Instructors and a member of the Bar ADR Panel, (until January, 2019) the Independent Standards Commission of the International Mediation Institute and Co-Chair of the IMI Mediation Advocacy Appraisal Sub-Committee. He is currently a visiting mediation and dispute management trainer to the Hong Kong, Nepal, Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir Bar Associations and the Judicial Academy of the Nepal Supreme Court, the Nepal International ADR Centre, the Thailand Arbitration Centre, and the Lagos Multi-Door Courthouse. He is an advisor on mediation to the Turkish Court of Cassation and the High Council of Justice in Brussels.

His areas of professional practice extend to commercial, property, construction, oil and gas, partnership, franchising, professional negligence and farming disputes. He has been recommended as a leading junior in professional indemnity work and mediation in the Legal 500 for 23 years ( qualifying for the Legal 500 ‘Hall of Fame’) and for four years was listed in Chambers Directory as a leading practitioner is ADR. He is currently Professor of Conflict Management and Dispute Resolution Studies at Rushmore University, a sometime visiting lecturer on the LLM/MA courses in Dispute Resolution at UCL and SOAS, University of London, and a peripatetic lecturer in mediation at 10 other UK universities; he is a visiting lecturer in arbitration and mediation at the Dubai Real Estate Institute, a guest lecturer to the University of Ghent LLM Alumni Association and a sessional lecturer at Mandela Institute, University of the Witwatersrand. In 2019 he will be lecturing at the Zealand Business School, Denmark.

Between 2007-2010 he was Director of Mediation Training for the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and led the CMC approved RICS mediator training courses in the UK and abroad until 2013. He was a guest lecturer on ADR for the Lord Chancellor's Visiting Chinese Lawyers' Fellowship Programme and has trained in mediation and conflict management and contracts management in the UAE, Kuwait, Oman, Nigeria, Turkey, Hong Kong, Malaysia, the Netherlands, Nepal, Thailand, India, Poland, Germany, France and Belgium; he advises governments, judiciaries and NGOs on mediation advocacy in Belgium, Croatia, Nigeria, Ghana, India, Singapore, Thailand, Kurdistan and the People’s Republic of China. He speaks widely on the subject both on an in-house and open basis.

Andrew is a senior mediator at the Joint Mainland-Hong Kong Mediation Centre; the Nepal International ADR Centre; the A+ ADR Centre, Ankara, and the Thailand Arbitration Centre; he is a Senior International Mediation Expert (SIME) of the International Dispute Resolution & Risk Management Institute (PRC).


He is the author and editor of nearly 50 books and 12 journals including Preparing for Mediation – A Guide for Consumers (Mediation Publishing 2015) Effective Mediation Advocacy – A Guide for Practitioners (3rd edn Mediation Publishing 2016 with practitioner and student editions in the UK and dedicated editions in Hong Kong, Nigeria, Turkey (Turkish language) and India); the contributor of the chapter on Evaluative Mediation in Mastering Commercial Mediation Richbell and Others (Bloomsbury 2014) and the chapter on Nepal to the Asia Mediation Handbook (Thomson Sweet & Maxwell HK 2015); author of How Judges Decide Cases: Reading, Writing and Analyzing Judgments (2nd edn Wildys 2018), Effective Written Advocacy in Practice (2nd edn Wildys 2011), although he is most well-known as author of The Court Guide (20th edn PP Publishing 2011-12).

Andrew regularly acts as a coach to teams entering international dispute resolution competitions, and has been a judge at the ICC Competition in Paris, the CDRC Competition in Vienna and the INADR competitions throughout the UK. In 2017 he helped the V.M. Salgaocar College of Law, Goa, team to the final of the Paris competition.
