PUBLIC ACCESS COUNSEL
1981: Bar Finals at Inns of Court School of Law, called to the Bar by Lincoln’s Inn
Pupillage at Angel Chambers, Swansea, with D.Roderick Evans (as he then
was) and John Diehl (as he then was). Whilst I was their pupil, both
moved from civil work into prosecuting heavy crime.
1982-90: Private practice at Angel Chambers, Swansea. Criminal and Common law.
Employed by CPS Inner London and (in 1996) Swansea as Senior Crown
Prosecutor. Main task in London was preparing cases for the Crown Court.
Advocacy at Inner London Crown Court and Old Bailey, pioneering Higher
Rights for CPS lawyers. Dealt with the consequences of corrupt police
officers, over 90 cases reopened.
1996-1999: Founding Head
of Pendragon Chambers, Swansea. Practised in Civil and Family cases,
also crime including defending coal industry workers indicted for
coal-picking. This long trial resulted in acquittal on half the
indictment and non-custodial sentences on the remainder.
Invited to join, and be Head of Chambers, of sets on the Midland
Circuit. Advising and appearing Civil, Chancery and Family matters in a
multi-ethnic environment. Also criminal experience including acquittals
on indictments for kidnap, also rape. Appeared for a defendant who
received a non-custodial sentence for causing death by dangerous
driving. During this period, advised and appeared in a variety of case
- Tribunal and Judicial Review proceedings to secure high-cost cancer drugs for patients
- Representing the residents of Stradey Park in opposing schemes to redevelop the rugby stadia of Llanelli
- Two reported cases on animal welfare law
– resumed full-time practice in Wales, to develop a long-standing
interest in all aspects of the law relating to Wales. Has advised in
cases concerning planning, judicial review cases on behalf of Claimants
and public law generally. Appeared in an ancillary relief trial, and
appeal, concerning assets exceeding £1m.
litigation – has appeared in chancery and commercial cases including
"Finurba v Imaved” action involving international fraud in the Royal
