I have been in practice as a barrister since 1983 and as an ADR practitioner for over 20 years. I have qualifications and experience as an arbitrator and an adjudicator as well as in mediation. I have the relevant professional background for these skills and undertake continuing professional development to keep them current.

Mediator 1996 to present
I have always acted as a sole mediator. My appointments have come from the Academy of Experts, the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, and the Court through the National Mediation Helpline or from an approach by the parties or their representatives.
I have mediated on over 60 occasions to date and have been able to assist the parties to a successful conclusion on virtually every occasion. I abide by the European Code of Conduct for Mediators.
Examples of mediations where I have acted as mediator are:
- professional negligence claims;
- construction disputes relating to quality of workmanship and sums owed under the contract;
- partnership disputes;
- disputes under the Inheritance Act 1975;
- TOLATA disputes arising from breakdown of co-habitation;
- boundary/trespass/right of way litigation
- personal injury and clinical negligence claims
- housing disrepair claims against both local authorities and social housing providers;
- commercial and private landlord and tenant disputes over lease issues;
- general commercial disputes over unpaid sums and quality of goods or workmanship.
I believe that mediation is the process where the client rather than the lawyer takes the lead and I encourage the clients to participate fully in discussions. I recommend the use of a joint opening session where practicable and exchanges of information in this forum, before speaking with the parties separately. Whilst it is never for the mediator to provide answers or advice, I do seek to bring a helpful and evaluative approach to the task in order to help the parties focus on realistic, workable outcomes and find a solution that all can accept.
I encourage parties to come to the mediation having considered any particular clauses that they consider must form part of an agreement (such as the form of redress or the need for confidentiality) and to have the agreement drafted to some extent already so that time is not wasted on uncontroversial matters.

My clerks will assist with fees in any particular case where necessary but as a guideline, my fee (exclusive of VAT) is £750.00 per party for a day of mediation, the day being 1000 to 1800 with preparation fees of £250.00 per hour divided equally between the parties.
I have standard terms under which I provide my services and these are available from my clerks and parties are asked to sign such terms to appoint me.

We have a number of rooms suitable for use in mediation, with scope to allow parties their own space as well as a sizeable meeting room that can be used for joint caucus sessions.
Chambers can provide refreshments and meet most reasonable demands during the day. Any requirements are charged at cost including VAT where appropriate. The clerks can best advise as to what assistance can be provided so please make any enquiries in advance of the mediation day.
