ProfileMichael’s practice encompasses all aspects of the law of property, including residential and commercial landlord and tenant matters and real property. Michael also acts in corporate and personal insolvency matters, disputes relating to trusts and estates, and company law where they relate to property. He has significant experience of claims involving agricultural land and businesses.
Michael is the co-editor of the 9th edition of Megarry’s Manual of the Law of Real Property and is also a visiting lecturer in the law of property at King’s College London.
Michael specialises in real property disputes and continues to act for some of the UK's largest lenders in claims involving undue influence, mortgage fraud, priority of interests and subrogation.
Michael regularly appears before the High Court, Upper Tribunal (Lands Chamber), County Courts and in the First Tier Tribunal (Property Chamber) in interim applications (including interlocutory injunctions) and trials. He also has experience of appearing in matters both alone and led by Queen’s Counsel.

Michael specialises in agricultural matters and frequently acts in cases involving farm buisiness tenancies, agricultural holdings and securities over agricultural businesses. He is a member of the Agricultural Law Assocation.
Landlord & Tenant
He has extensive experience of commercial leasehold matters, enfranchisement, service charge and long-lease disputes. Michael’s experience in residential and commercial landlord and tenant matters includes:
• Lease renewals under the Landlord and Tenant Act 1954
• Possession and forfeiture of residential and commercial leases
• Enfranchisement and lease extension
• Claims under the Landlord and Tenant Act 1987
• Management and service charge disputes
• Disputes relating to Rent Act tenancies
• Tenancy deposit scheme litigation
• Nuisance and other property related torts
Michael has acted in both domestic and international commercial arbitrations. He has recently acted in three LCIA arbitrations. One concerned a claim involving economic torts valued at US$500 million against a multi-national company, in which Michael was instructed as junior counsel. The second is a dispute relating to a service contract valued at US$2.2 million. The third relates to a dispute over the sale and purchase of an overseas company in the mining and minerals sector.
Michael’s other recent corporate and commercial litigation has involved acting for clients in claims relating to share sale and purchase agreements, retention of title of goods and conversion, bailment, and general commercial contractual disputes.
