Philip is head of chambers at Tanfield Chambers. He became a QC in 2010. He is noted for his "fearsome" courtroom advocacy and for acting on complex and high-value cases - especially those with a difficult point of law. Philip appears in many appeals and has a good record in overturning lower court or tribunal decisions in the appeal courts.

Philip is a specialist in property litigation. Within that field, Philip is an expert in Leasehold Enfranchisement, including associated areas such as Rights of First Refusal and Right to Manage. He is also noted for his experience and expertise in service charge disputes. Philip has considerable experience acting for and against developers, in respect of overage disputes, establishing service charges, offplan sales, social and affordable housing aspects and the problems of mixed use developments among others.

Philip has appeared in a number of leading appeal cases in the property field, including the recent "squatters rights" judicial review in R(Best) v Chief Land Registrar [2015] 2 P&CR 1, the House of Lords decisions in Cadogan v Sportelli [2010] 1 AC 226 and Howard de Walden v Aggio [2009] 1 AC 39, and the Supreme Court decisions in Daejan Investments v Benson [2013] 1 WLR 854 and Menelaou v Bank of Cyprus (2015)
