I'm a specialist in tax, public law and clinical negligence, with 20+ years of experience in these areas. My tax work includes VAT and duties as well as direct taxes such as corporation tax, my public law work includes immigration, and I act in all kinds of clinical negligence cases.

I am ranked as a leading silk (QC) by the legal directories Chambers and Partners and the Legal 500, which have described me as “very persuasive”, “very insightful and can articulate complex concepts in an easy to digest way” and “a very compelling advocate”, whose “drafting is fantastic” and whose “performances in conference impress”. Before becoming a silk, I did a lot of work for the government in my areas of practice, which led to me regularly appearing in the highest courts, including the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court. This enabled me to become a QC at a young age, whilst still in my thirties. Most of my work now is for private clients, including individuals.

Area of Law

Clinical Negligence

I have a thriving advisory and court practice in clinical negligence, where I regularly act for claimants, doctors and hospitals in cases involving complex medical evidence and profound and high-value injuries. My work spans all areas of clinical negligence, such as delayed diagnosis of cancer and birth injury cases and also cases raising more unusual medical issues, one example being a trial on whether the rare disease of necrotising fasciitis should have been detected earlier in an intravenous drug user.

Public and Administrative Law

I appear in judicial reviews for both claimants and public bodies and have vast appellate experience in the Court of Appeal, having appeared there dozens of times as sole counsel. I have acted in a number of complex and other cases. For example, I appeared as amicus (friend to the court) in the Court of Appeal in the AR (Pakistan) case on immigration bail powers, and I have had numerous successful appearances in the Court of Appeal and in the tribunal in human rights and immigration cases. I have also been lead counsel in the Supreme Court.

Tax and Revenue

Areas of work include VAT, customs and excise duties, landfill tax, plastic packaging tax, rating, crypto, pensions cases, corporation tax and income tax. I have acted in numerous landmark cases over the last few years. These include the British Film Institute litigation on the VAT cultural exemption that went to the European Court of Justice, appearing as sole counsel in the Amoena appeal which is the only ever customs case to have gone to the House of Lords or Supreme Court, acting as lead counsel in the seminal rating case of Newbigin v Monk in the Supreme Court and appearing again in the Supreme Court in the major VAT case of SAE Education Ltd.

What sort of work do I do?

In tax, I advise on all areas of indirect tax, such as VAT, customs and excise duties and environmental taxes including landfill tax and the plastic packaging tax. I also act in direct tax cases, such as those involving alleged pension 'liberation', corporation tax and income tax. My tax work involves regular appearances in the First-tier Tribunal (Tax Chamber) and the Upper Tribunal (Tax and Chancery Chamber), and then onward on appeal to the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court. I also have significant experience in tax judicial review claims in the Administrative Court, and in rating cases.
My main area of public law is immigration, and I have appeared many times in the Immigration and Asylum Chamber of both the First-tier Tribunal and the Upper Tribunal, and in the higher courts on appeal. I act in all kinds of cases, including asylum, humanitarian protection, human rights, deportation and entry clearance. My work includes both immigration and nationality judicial review claims, and I act for claimants in related civil work, such as claims against the Home Office for false imprisonment.
My clinical negligence work encompasses areas including catastrophic birth injury claims, allegations of delayed diagnosis and more unusual medical issues.

Who do I work for?

In tax, I help individuals and companies who are having problems with HMRC, or who want advice on a particular issue. I will help with tax cases in any court or tribunal and also with settlement. In public law, I will act for those with an asylum, immigration or nationality issue or who wish to make a human rights argument. I will also act for those considering any kind of judicial review claim. In clinical negligence, I will represent individuals thinking of bringing a claim against their GP or a hospital.
