Direct Access Barrister

Morgan Read

Morgan’s practice has focused on public law with an emphasis on Immigration, Asylum, Family and Judicial Review. Morgan does not discriminate between clients and is happy to accept work directly from members of the public in addition to his professional clients.

Morgan transferred from the New Zealand bar in 2013 and commenced his UK practice that year. Morgan began his advocacy as director of the New Zealand Screen Director’s Guild with a particular interest in copyright and authorship, before beginning practice as a barrister.

Area of Law

Family

Morgan practises family law with a particular focuses on the rights of children to a relationship with both parents within an international context.

Human Rights

The European Contention on Human Rights is the bread and butter of any Immigration practice - the right to family life provided by Article 8 is essential to family reunification across national boarders.

The right to protection from torture and other forms of personal abuse by the state is the core of asylum. Those rights are protected by the European Convention and the UN Convention on Refugees.

Morgan relies on these rights when he challenges bad decisions for his clients.

Immigration, Asylum and Nationality

Immigration, Asylum and Nationality law is the core of Morgan's practice.

Public and Administrative Law

Morgan accepts instructions in judicial review proceedings in the High Court, Upper Tribunal and appeals. Judicial review challenges a decision by the state in its many forms, but the Home Office generates a lot of bad decisions and particularly asylum and immigration decisions. I also accept instructions in other areas of public law including benefits, housing and planning law.
