Direct Access Barrister

Esther Mei-P'Ing Lieu

I am a specialist family lawyer practicing in private law children (to include injunctions) and financial remedy matters (to include cohabitation/ property disputes).

I apply my extensive legal knowledge to the specific details of your case to provide sound advice and forceful skilled representation in court.

My private children practice encompasses all issues that arise between parties in raising their children. These include allegations of domestic violence (physical, sexual, emotional, financial and coercive and controlling behaviour), drug and substance misuse, intractable hostility through to parental alienation, applications to relocate, disagreements over schooling and living/ contact arrangements.

I also represent parties in applications for (or to oppose) Non-Molestation and Occupation Orders.

My financial practice covers all financial issues that can arise a marriage or civil partnership ends : division of assets, pension sharing orders, maintenance (interim, final, variation), property adjustment/ transfer, trusts and business interests. I deal with issues of disclosure, sham transactions, inheritance and pre/post marriage accrual.

For parties who were cohabiting but not married, I advise on any claims for maintenance for any children from the relationship ('Schedule 1') and property disputes where both of just one of you own the property you are or were living in (ToLATA).

In both my private children and financial practice, I often deal with cross-jurisdictional and international elements.

I understand that no-one wants to find themselves in court, and I will provide you with reassurance, clarity and confidence throughout the process.

What sort of work do I do?

I appear at all levels of the Family Court (magistrates through to High Court) and represent parents, grand-parents, Guardians and Intervenors.

Within private children matters as well as applications for Non-Molestation and Occupation Orders, I am regularly instructed in multi-day fact findings, as well as at all stages within proceedings (from First Hearing, or FHDRA, through to Final hearings).

Within my financial practice, I represent parties at First Direction Appointments (FDA), Financial Dispute Resolutions (FDR) and Final Hearing, as well as all hearings arising in ToLATA and Schedule 1 claims.

I also provide advice to clients who may or may not already be in court proceedings and need advice as to the strengths and weaknesses of their case and appropriate steps to take without requiring full representation. This can help save money and provide peace of mind.

Who do I work for?

Over the last 10 years I have represented a huge variety of people, each person with their own background, story and concerns.

I have represented people who consider themselves to be vulnerable for all sorts of reasons, individuals who have had very challenging experiences and parties facing serious allegations. I represent people trying to juggle careers with the court process, people caring for others, parents raising children, concerned family members and people unwillingly drawn into the court process.
