Ben Amunwa

Commercial, technology & employment law barrister | problem-solving for business

Previously, I've managed an environmental watchdog and worked on large-scale international corporate accountability lawsuits at a leading firm

Area of Law

Commercial

Since 2014, I have provided detailed advice and robust representation to companies and individuals alike.

In 2021, I guided a technology company through the EU database right law, providing a global legal risk report.

In 2020, I represented 5 defendants in a direct access case in the London Circuit Commercial Court and in 2019 I acted for a defendant employee in a High Court privacy injunction case, also by direct access. I frequently help clients to settle cases successfully out of Court, via negotiation or mediation where possible.

If I cannot help you in good time or if I think your case requires additional resources, I can draw on a wide network of other experienced commercial lawyers.

Employment and Pensions

• Equality-focused practice acting for public authorities, businesses, unions, regulated professionals and employees/workers.
• Experienced in handling sophisticated witnesses (including solicitors and partners at magic circle firms), conducting multi-day trials (10 to 15 days) and dealing with wasted costs, breaches of disclosure duties, data protection & immigration issues.
• Advise and represent parties in the Employment Appeal Tribunal, including in union-backed claims.

Freedom of Information and Data Protection

As an experienced user of information law, I've practised in this area while wearing different hats for over 10 years, working with charities, journalists and researchers as well as public authorities. I now offer advice and representation on data breaches, FOI and privacy disputes, covering Tribunal appeals and civil court matters.

Some of my recent information law cases have concerned high profile archive documents dating back to 1938 and sensitive law enforcement issues. I have handled numerous damages claims against public authorities over the unauthorised disclosure of personal data, rectification of inaccurate records, breaches of human rights and vicarious liability claims.

What sort of work do I do?

I provide legal advice and representation to businesses who can't always hire their own in-house lawyers or who wish to avoid the eye-watering hourly rates of city law firms.

I've resolved problems for a fraction of what it might otherwise cost. Contact me if you require commercial expertise from a lawyer who handles disputes and at all levels of the Court and Tribunal system.
